This is written tongue in cheek. Supposedly, Dickens describes the attributes of various types of young men, for the edification of young women. It's very, very dated in the descriptions, and some of it simply doesn't pertain to our times. But as a period piece, it's priceless. Quite an insight into former values of a bygone age.
